A native of Xinghua 興化 and the zhuangyuan 壯元 of 1547. He was made senior compiler 修撰 and then academician 學士 of the Hanlin Academy 翰林院. Later he served as the Minister 尙書 of the Ministry of Rites 禮部 and then the Ministry of Personnel 吏部. He became ranking Grand Secretary 首輔 of the Grand Secretariat 內閣 during the early years of the Longqing 隆慶 period.
