Zou Yan 鄒衍 추연
(쩌우옌)
(305-240 BCE). A Chinese philosopher known for the correlative thinking of the Yin and Yang 陰陽. He was one of the most famous scholars of the Jixia 稷下 Academy in the state of Qi 齊.

(d. 120 CE). A prose writer during the Western Han period.
Zou Yinglong 鄒應龍 추응룡
(쩌우잉룽)
A native of Chang'an 長安 or Lanzhou 蘭州. A jinshi of 1556. He successfully impeached Yan Song 嚴嵩 (1480-1567), who had held sway over the court for twenty years, and his son Yan Shifan 嚴世藩. Due to the impeachment, he became Commissionor of the Office of Transmission 通政使. Later he became vice censor-in-chief 副都御史 of the Censorate 都察院 and then VIce Minister of the Ministry of War 兵部 and Governor 巡撫 of Yunnan 雲南. When he supervised Yunnan province, he disclosed aristocrats' illegal activities and suppressed aboriginal rebels. After he impeached Feng Bao 馮保, a powerful enunch, he was demoted and eventually expelled from the court. After his death, the emperor realized his uprightness and reestablished his earlier official positions. 추응룡(鄒應龍)
Zou Yuanbiao 鄒元標 추원표
(쩌우위안뱌오)
(1551-1624). A native of Jishui 吉水, Jiangxi 江西 and jinshi of 1577. As a leader of Donglin party, he was a brave and straightforward speaker. When Zhang Juzheng's 張居正 father died, he argued that Zhang should leave his positions to observe the mourning period. Due to this, he was beaten with bamboo sticks 80 times and expelled to Yunnan 雲南. When he returned after Zhang's death, he asked Emperor Wanli 萬曆 to launch personnel reforms. As Wei Zhongxian 魏忠賢 swayed the court, he left politics. 원표(元標), 추원표(鄒元標)
Zu Chengxun 祖承訓 조승훈
(쭈청쉰)
A native of Ningyuan 寧遠 and the father of Zu Dashou 祖大壽. He came from a prestigious family with military background in Liaodong 遼東. He was the first military commander who was dispatched to Joseon during the Imjin War (aka Hideyoshi's Invasion). He attacked the Japanese in Pyeongyang 平壤 in the summer of 1592, but he was defeated and escaped to Liaodong. He returned to Joseon in the first month of the next year as an assistant general of Li Rusong 李如松. He entered Pyoengyang again and eventually defeated the Japanese army. Later he participated in the Battle of Ulsan 蔚山 in the winter of 1597-1598. 승훈(承訓), 장대선(張大膳), 조승훈(祖承訓), 조총병(祖摠兵), 조총병(祖總兵), 총병(總兵)
Zu Dashou 祖大壽 조대수
(쭈다서우)
(1579~1656). A native of Ningyuan 寧遠 and the father-in-law of Wu Sangui 吳三桂. Born to a prestigious family in Liaodong 遼東, his brothers were all officers in Liaodong. He defeated Nurhaci 努爾哈赤 at Ningyuan. In 1631 he built a bulwark in the Daling River 大凌河 valley. When Hungtaiji 皇太極 surrounded the bulwark, Zu stood for three months before he surrendered due to the lack of supplies. He escaped to Jinzhou and stood against the Manchus for another ten years. In 1641, when he was again surrounded by Hungtaiji's army, and his army was about to starve to death, he was forced to surrender once more. After the Manchus entered Beijing, the Manchu court gifted him a house in Beijing. He lived there for twelve years until his death. 대수(大壽), 조대수(祖大壽), 조총병(祖摠兵)
Zu Ji 祖己 조기
(쭈지)
The eldest son of Wu Ding 武丁. He never succeeded to the throne as he was exiled for life in the twenty-fifth year of Wu Ding's reign. 조이(Zu Yi 祖已), 효기(Xiao Ji 孝己)
Zu Jia 祖甲 조갑
(쭈자)
A king of the Shang dynasty. According to recent studies of oracle bone inscriptions, he reformed ancestral worship by decreasing sacrifices to mythical ancestors and natural deities in favor of more historical ancestors. 제갑(Di Jia 帝甲)
Zu Ti 祖逖 조적
(쭈티)
(266-321). A military general of the Eastern Jin dynasty and native of Fanyang Commandery 范陽郡. He insisted on Emperor Yuan's 元帝 northern expedition without success. 사치(Shi Zhi 士稚)
Zu Ting 祖珽 조정
(쭈팅)
An official of the Northern Qi 北齊 during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period and a native of Fanyang Commandery 范陽郡. He was highly reputed to be a man of literary and administrative ablity. Impressed by his talent, Gao Huan 高歡 took Zu Ting as his secretary on his staff. However, he was also known for being corrupted official who took many bribes. 효징(Xiaozheng 孝徵)
